When the holidays hit most people start unpacking their outdoor Xmas lights and begin to think of how to decorate. Some people prefer to keep the decorations simple and easy. While others like to go all out and make complex patterns with their outdoor lights. Regardless of where and how you decide to decorate no one can argue that decorating is half the fun during the holiday season.

When you are setting up your decorating plans you often have to choose where you’re going to hang your lights. Outdoor  lights come in various shapes, sizes, patterns, and colors. In most cases you have your house, your yard, and your garden to decorate. Some people never bother with a plan and just go with a spur of the moment idea at the last minute.

Other people take great meticulous care when planning out their outdoor Christmas decorations lighting patterns and some even start in the spring. These people tend to produce some amazing light displays, but most of us aren’t looking for an award or medal for most complicated display. We just want to decorate because it’s that time of year, and it’s fun to do. That being said you have to think about what kind of light goes where.

Regardless of if you’re a big planner or spur of the moment type of person some outdoor Xmas lights work better than others in certain locations. When many of us were children we could remember the outdoor lights that were big, bulky, and quite hot. These bulbs were made of glass and were very power hungry. Due to their fragile nature they couldn’t be put in every place.

This type is hard to find anymore as most people prefer the more modern, smaller, efficient, and durable lights. These are very small and are made of a hard clear plastic. This makes them extremely shatter resistant, but if you step on one it will still break. These can be made into prefabricated patters, or looped around your own custom paths at home. These Xmas lights can usually be strung up anywhere so long as you have a hook, ledge, or other protrusion to hang them from.

Next you have the LED light types which are the most expensive, but also the smallest. They use considerably less energy, and are very bright. If you need a reference as to what an LED looks like take a look at any lights on your desktop or laptop. Those are LED’s and if you’ve left your machine on at night in a dark room you can attest to how bright they are.

There are a few safety guidelines that most people should follow with outside lights. When you’re hanging them have someone with you in case you get hurt. Always wear proper safety gear and exercise caution when on roofs. Finally always plug your lights into a high rated surge protector just to be on the safe side.

Hanging outdoor Xmas lights is something many look forward to every year. Make sure to be safe, and use common sense during installation. If you want to do something special you can plan a design ahead of time. Just remember this happens only once a year, so enjoy yourself.
